Jack and Alice McLean
"The Nature of Bronze"
2011 interview with Jack in his studio by Jason Whalen and Jesse McLean in loving memory.
"The process has evolved through a 40 year dialogue with materials;
I have learned when to impose my will and when to listen.
As the process continues to improve with experience, the superfluous is eliminated and
detail proportionate to the piece is retained
Working in series creates a slowly accumulating momentum, wearing away the non-essential
to reveal what is primitive and authentic to a particular aesthetic..
With each piece, with each series, I learn to recognize completion.
I want my pieces to look "made" and to retain evidence of my hand and thought."
